Birthday lunch at The Milk House, Sissinghurst
One of our favourite places to eat locally is The Milk House in Sissinghurst. Situated in the middle of the beautiful Kent village of Sissinghurst, The Milk House is a former 16th century hall house, with timber beams and a stunning fireplaces.
The beauty of The Milk House is a village pub, serving locals, but it also welcomes visitors from further afield to eat in the pub, or to dine in The Milk House Dining Room. The Milk House prides itself on its delicious food, keeping it simple, working with the seasons and using only the freshest produce from local suppliers creating menus with something for everyone.
We visit this pub a few times a year, weekends tend to be very busy, so I would recommend booking, however weekday lunchtimes are relatively quiet. Although don’t be fooled, weekdays, which is when we tend to visit always have tables full of happy diners and a bar full of locals, so don’t be surprised to see a full car park in the middle of the week!
Today, we visited to have a lunch to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. The staff here are always SO welcoming, and so good with little ones. The child menu is just as simple and unfussy as the main menus, with lots to choose from. My daughter had her favourite, Kid’s fish and chips with peas and happily ate the whole dish. My husband had the beef burger and as ever wasn’t disappointed with the plate of food presented to him. I picked a dish from the recently launched ‘Summer Classic Menu’; Crispy duck, radicchio, endive and iceberg salad, pickled watermelon, chilli, lime, soy and coriander dressing, it was incredible. So delicious, I honestly could have eaten another plate of it.
For pudding, we enjoyed some sorbet and a chocolate pudding, what made my daughter’s day, was when the waitress came to the table with a candle in her pudding and wished her a happy birthday. This was totally unprompted, she had done this of her own accord having heard we were celebrating her birthday… not to mention, she was covered in birthday badges.
What I really enjoy about visiting The Milk House, is the relaxed, welcoming environment… the food and the drink are incredible, but the decor, ambience as well as the service is exceptional. I thoroughly enjoy our visits there; my only complaint is that we don’t visit as much as I would like!
