Signs of Spring in the Woods – Thought Clothing
According to the calendar the first day of Spring arrived a week ago, it arived on a date set by those who need to record absolutes, but nature and the woodland is not influenced by man’s set days. Instead, Spring arrives when it decides and is affected mainly by the temperature of the ground and the amount of sunlight it is exposed to.
Often it seems as if Spring will never arrive, but after days of glorious weather, suddenly buds are turning into leaves, the plants are flowering, the bracken unfolding and the birds have burst into song. Early spring is the time for woodland flowers; they take advantage of the warmth and the sunlight which hits the woodland floor through the canopy of bare trees.
Dotted around in patches, the primroses have appeared with the promise of Spring and the tiny ground ivy, another early woodland flower, is growing along the floor and through timber stacks.
The white anemones are often the first to open up on the woodland floor and in wetter ground it is the bright yellow lesser celandine; these little flowers are one of the earliest woodland flowers to appear at the very beginning of spring. Now that the plants have brought spring into the woods, a variety of insects have emerged from hibernation over the past weeks to feed on these new food sources.
Of course the bluebell shoots are coming on leaps and bounds, the once bushy shoots are now thick, tall, vibrant green and carpet the entire woodland floor.
The bare silver birch trees and cut chestnut stools now have tiny leaves emerging from the buds of recent weeks. It really is a wonderful time to take a walk in the woods, and to stop and take each tiny new seasonal change in. Even after ten years here, I am still blown away by the sudden shift in seasons when they eventually arrive.
With the return of warmer weather, it isn’t just the woodland flora and wildlife who are soaking up the start of Spring, I too am feeling the benefits of the longer warmer days…
My wardrobe is also making the shift into lighter clothing. I really love Autumn and Winter fashion, bundling up with chunky knits, early Spring days are often a time for layering too, but as the weather starts to warm up, I really enjoy getting outside and letting my skin soak up the Vitamin D.
One of my favourite clothing brands Thought have been through a transition, not just with their name change and new website, but with their clothing range. Their Spring Collection 17 is full of some absolute gems, and I have been wearing a few items from the collection over the last few weeks.
The Sprig Organic Cotton Blouse is an organic cotton blouse with a really pretty neckline and buttons down the front. I really like paring this delicate print blouse with a pair of jeans, but it would also be perfect layered under a pinafore dress.
This Organic Cotton Blouse, is great during the day with a pair of trusty jeans, or dressed up with smarter trousers and a necklace for an evening out. This is a top that can be styled in more ways than one.
Worn over the top of the Organic Cotton Blouse or a vest top, another favourite from the SS17 collection is the Willow Organic Cotton Top. This Organic Cotton Top showcases a range of stitch patterns and is a wonderfully soft texture. It has a traditional crew neckline and bracelet-length sleeves with pointelle details.
It is the Willow Organic Cotton Top that one of my Instagram followers has the opportunity to win in my hashtag photo competition. With only the remainder of this week to go, you can find more details of the competition here Thought Organic Clothing – Giveaway with #MySlowMorning_ .
